The San Jose Sharks’ 2-0 lead disappeared just like that.

With Game 5 looming as the end of their first ever trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, the San Jose Sharks had to get off to a fast start. That’s exactly what they did, with Brent Burns staking his team to a 1-0 lead less than two minutes in and Logan Couture adding a goal not long after.

Unfortunately for the Sharks, that lead disintegrated even faster than they built it.

First it was Evgeni Malkin, converting a lovely pass from possible soon to be Conn Smythe winner Phil Kessel (and getting some help from a stick on the way in, or so it appeared).

Then just 22 seconds later, a turnover loomed large for the Sharks and Carl Hagelin was the Penguins player who cashed in on it on a deflection of a Nick Bonino shot.

Things settled down just a bit after that, though the Penguins had a power play opportunity about halfway through the first period that saw them get multiple opportunities to take the lead. They also managed to ring the post behind San Jose goalie Martin Jones multiple times.

Who knows if the two teams can keep this kind of pace up for all of Game 5, but if anyone was dreading a goaltending battle for what could be the deciding tilt of the Stanley Cup Finals, you can chuck those worries right out the window.
