Remembering the five greatest moments from the distinguished and unforgettable career of Gordie Howe that lasted five decades.

The world of hockey suffered a titanic loss on Friday when the Detroit Red Wings confirmed that forward Gordie Howe passed away at the age of 88. Howe was rightfully known as “Mister Hockey” because many consider him to be the NHL’s first household name and mainstream superstar.

Until Wayne Gretzky came around, Howe was the NHL’s career leader in goals, assists, and points. Today, he ranks second in career goals, ninth in assists, and fourth in points. When one factors in the offensively anemic era during which his greatest years were spent, an argument could be had that Howe is the greatest player in NHL history.

His death is devastating not just because he was a wonderful player, but also because he might have been an even more wonderful person. Howe was universally loved and respected by players, coaches, executives, and fans. His smile was contagious and his passion for the game of hockey is one that the world might never see again. It’s hard to imagine where the NHL would be today if it wasn’t for Howe. Who knows? Maybe Gretzky would have stayed in the WHA.

Here are the five greatest moments from the NHL career of Gordie Howe.
