The San Diego Chargers locked up top receiver Keenan Allen to a contract extension.

The San Diego Chargers aren’t letting number one receiver Keenan Allen go anywhere. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Allen and the club have agreed to a four-year extension. According to NFL.com, the deal is worth a total of $44 million and Rand Getlin reports it contains $24 million in guarantees.

Nevertheless, this should be a deal that is beneficial for both sides.

When healthy, Allen has proven to be one of the more promising wide receivers in the NFL. His $11 million annual salary is a considerable boost in pay from the $703,230 he was playing for on his rookie deal he signed after coming out of California. He’s been one of the best bargains in the NFL on that deal, but now he’ll be among the top 10 paid receivers in the NFL.

Now, he just needs to consistently produce like one. Allen’s biggest problem is staying healthy. He missed the second half of the season with a lacerated kidney. Prior to the injury, Allen was putting up monstrous numbers with 67 receptions for 725 yards.

Projecting that out over the full season and Allen would have had 134 receptions and 1,450 yards and cemented his place in NFL history and likely would have earned a bigger payday than what he did receive.

Allen won’t be scheduled to hit free agency until 2020.
