Seth Rollins hit a move on AJ Styles at a house show that Vince McMahon told another superstar to stop using in the early 2000s
There are plenty of moves in WWE that have been banned for one reason or another, most often though the reason is that Vince McMahon and the higher-ups in the company want to keep performers safe and fans safe if they were to try and replicate the moves. That’s why you won’t see almost anyone (save for The Undertaker) doing a piledriver and why Seth Rollins no longer uses the Curb Stomp.
However, Seth Rollins used another move that hasn’t been seen in WWE since the start of the new millennium.
At a house show this weekend as the former WWE World Heavyweight champion continued his series of live event bouts with AJ Styles, Rollins busted out The Vertebreaker to try and pick up the win over the relative newcomer:
First off, that move still looks incredible and fans may remember it as Shane Helms’ finisher before he got to WWE and started using The Hurricane gimmick. That would be when Vince said “no way” on the move and it hasn’t been seen since.
Obviously there is a little more leeway with house shows when it comes to spots and moves, but you have to wonder if this is something that’s going to be coming down the pipeline for Seth Rollins on WWE television in the future. Could this be a new finisher? A signature move? Just something cool that he pulls out every once in a while?
After seeing it just once on a house show, there’s no way of knowing if it’s more than just a one-off or not—but we can sure hope that it isn’t.
