Sam Cohen played hero for the UCSB as he hit a walk-off grand slam against Louisville to advance the Gauchos to their first College World Series appearance

The UCSB Gauchos had arguably the most successful season in the history of the baseball program throughout the regular season and then carrying on into the 2016 NCAA Baseball Tournament as they won the Nashville Regional to set up a date with the Louisville Cardinals in the Super Regionals. However, the Gauchos still had a first-ever trip to the College World Series in mind after a win in Game 1.

In Game 2, it looked like they might have to wait until a decisive third contest to see if they’d go to the College World Series as the UCSB bats were ice cold against stellar Louisville pitching. Shockingly, though, the Gauchos came alive at the plate against a first-round pick in the MLB Draft in Zack Burdi on the mound. After loading the bases trailing 3-0, Sam Cohen came to the plate with a chance to win it.

And win it he did as Cohen launched a grand slam over the right field wall just ahead of the foul pole for the massive walk-off win:

You can write this down as reason 1 billion why sports are incredible. You have one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball on the mound against a team that’s been quiet all day and a freshman comes up and wins the game on a walk-off grand slam to punch UC Santa Barbara’s first ever trip to the College World Series.

That’s better than any fiction.
