The 2016 U.S. Open takes place later this week. Where is it located this year?

The PGA Tour will head to the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania for the 2016 U.S. Open this week. This is the ninth time that Oakmont will host the U.S. Open, which is the more than any other course in the history of the event.

Oakmont is historically an extremely difficult course, with long holes and multiple roughs per hole being the regular. The last time that the U.S. Open was played at Oakmont was in 2007, when Angel Cabrera took home the win with a score of five strokes over par.

Expect more of the higher scores similar to 2007, as the Oakmont course will continue to be a struggle for even the best golfers in the world.

According to GolfOdds.com, Jason Day is the current favorite for the event at 13/2. Unsurprisingly, Rory McIlroy at 7/1 and reigning U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth at 8/1 are right on his heels.

Dustin Johnson checks in next at 12/1, followed by the group of Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson at 25/1.

While these guys are the clear favorites of the pack, there are always unexpected players to come through and compete. At an extremely tough course like Oakmont, things can often get crazy. Be on the lookout for surprise contenders early and often throughout the weekend.

The 116th U.S. Open begins on Thursday, June 16th with the first groups teeing off at 6:45 AM ET and will go throughout the weekend before wrapping up on Sunday.
