The Mets have ruled out a return of former starting shortstop Jose Reyes.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies announced that they designated Jose Reyes for assignment. His 15 days on the reserve list was up, and the organization had to make a decision on his future. Reyes had previously been suspended for 51 games due to domestic violence allegations from 2015.

All 29 teams other MLB teams will have the chance to get Reyes. One team that can be ruled out is the New York Mets, who are not interested in reacquiring him, according to Jon Heyman.

This shouldn’t come as a big surprise given the Mets’ stability at shortstop and second base with Asdrubal Cabrera and Neil Walker, respectively. They have had decent years, so the Amazins won’t need an upgrade.

Reyes was a star for the Mets from 2003-11. He hit .292 over the course of nine seasons, before leaving for the Miami Marlins in free agency. The 33-year-old was then traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012, and came to the Colorado Rockies in the blockbuster Troy Tulowitzki at the 2015 MLB Trade Deadline.

Where Jose Reyes goes remains to be seen. He doesn’t have the necessary range to be a shortstop anymore, and a team looking to put him there may be a stretch. The Dominican has also regressed with his bat, making it unknown if a further decline is upcoming. Reyes is a risk, but someone will probably take him.
