After trying to trade Eugene Monroe, the Ravens have decided to cut ties with the left tackle by releasing him.

Eugene Monroe’s days in Baltimore were numbered from the day the Baltimore Ravens drafted Ronnie Stanley in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Monroe’s controversial opinions about marijuana usage and inability to stay healthy became too much of a liability for the Ravens to keep long-term. After trying to trade him, the Ravens have officially released Monroe.

With Monroe gone, barring another addition, the Ravens will likely go with Stanley as their starting left tackle. Stanley projects to be an above-average left tackle with his solid frame, above average athleticism, and his great technique. By releasing Monroe, the Ravens will save quite a bit against the salary cap. He was supposed to make $6.5 million this season, which makes it understandable why nobody was willing to take on his salary.

Monroe all but forced the Ravens hand after going on a Twitter rant. The 29 year old left tackle signed his deal back in 2013. Monroe is a former first round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Teams are expected to pursue Monroe because he is still a talented player. However, how many teams will be willing to put up with the headache surrounding him and his controversial opinions?

The Giants, Chargers, and Seahawks are among the teams that could be interested in Monroe as a free agent. Pittsburgh would make sense as well, but he might not have a starting role with the Steelers.
