While the Cleveland Cavaliers have to win two straight games to win the NBA Championship, free agency is just a few weeks away and one player on the team appears to already have his plans for then ready.
According to Chris Haynes of cleveland.com, guard J.R. Smith plans to opt out of his deal and hit free agency. It would be the second time in two years that Smith will have opted out of his deal with the Cavaliers.
"Cleveland Cavaliers sharpshooter J.R. Smith will allow his player option deadline of June 16 to pass in order to become a unrestricted free agent this summer, league sources informed cleveland.com."
Last year, Smith opted out of his deal in hopes of landing a bigger deal somewhere and when that didn’t happen with the Cavaliers, he ended up having to re-sign for less than he could have made.
However, with the salary cap set to spike this year, there is a very real chance that he’s finally going to get the deal that he wants on the market. He has once again proven to be a solid player for the Cavaliers and has played a big role in the NBA Finals.
If the Cavaliers can pull off the comeback and win the title, then it’s likely his market will increase even more.
