A fellow New Zealander known as Mr. G painted an awesome, albeit terrifying mural of Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams in downtown Oklahoma City.
In eight years, Oklahoma City has created a basketball culture most reminiscent to a college-type of atmosphere with the city’s only professional team: the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder.
After a fantastic season where the Thunder nearly defeated the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 Western Conference Finals, one New Zealand artist known as Mr. G painted a massive mural in downtown Oklahoma City of fellow countryman Thunder center Steven Adams. The giant mural is both awesome and terrifying at the same time.
Mr. G, also known as Graham Hoete, came to the United States a few weeks ago to do spray paint murals of two of America’s most beloved icons in the late pop star Prince and The Greatest Muhammad Ali.
Hoete would say in the video that because Adams is the most popular athlete in New Zealand in 2016 that it was very important to him to travel to Oklahoma City and deliver a fantastic mural of the Thunder’s star center.
Adams came on as an immensely important player on Billy Donovan’s 2015-16 Thunder. His physicality in the low-post and his rugged physique have made Adams a beloved figure not just in New Zealand, but to fans all over the world who adore the NBA.
The wall Hoete chose to paint his mural of Adams is merely blocks away from Oklahoma City’s two most recognizable buildings: the gigantic Devon Tower and Chesapeake Energy Arena, home of the Thunder.
The mural perfectly encapsulates all that makes Adams one of the NBA’s most recognizable players. He’s got the thick mustache, the crazy hair of his tied back, the beginnings of Adams’ tribal arm sleeve, and the look of a big man that nobody wants to mess with in the paint. Terrifying, yet magnificent.
