5. Wade Baldwin IV, PG, Vanderbilt

With his impressive measurements (6-4 with a 6-11 wingspan) confirmed at the draft combine, Vanderbilt’s Wade Baldwin has become a hotly contested draft prospect with some analysts placing him as high as fifth on their big boards while others view him as a likely late lottery to mid-first round selection. The 20-year old delivered two productive seasons at Vanderbilt before opting to leave for the NBA and he has the necessary tools to be an effective point guard at the next level with reasonable upside as an NBA starter.

Baldwin is a willing passer, capable of finding open teammates both in the half court and in transition. He posted assist rates higher than 30 percent in both of his college seasons and his 6.9 assists per 40 minutes as a sophomore ranks behind only Kay Felder, Kris Dunn, and Tyler Ulis for collegiate point guard prospects in this class.

There a few questions about Baldwin, though. He’s not a great pick-and-roll player yet, but it’s possible that was related to sub-par coaching at Vanderbilt and he has the skills needed to pick up on the action in the NBA. He also has a rather high turnover rate for a point guard, committing one on 19.7 percent of possessions as a sophomore. Still, the tools are there for Baldwin to be a starting quality floor general if he’s able to clean up those two issues.
