High Salary
David Ortiz, Red Sox (5,600): “Big Papi” costs 700 more than any other first baseman on Thursday’s slate, and he’s still probably worth it. The 40-year-old slugger just continues to post monster numbers in his final season. In particular, he’s hitting .358 with 14 of his 16 home runs against right-handers this season. That does not bode well for Baltimore Orioles righty Tyler Wilson (2-5, 4.73 ERA).
Miguel Cabrera, Tigers (4,900): Like Ortiz, “Miggy” seemingly hasn’t lost a step as he gets older. The 33-year-old is hitting .301, which would mark his eighth straight .300-plus season. On Thursday, he faces Kansas City Royals lefty Danny Duffy, against whom he is 6-for-21 with three doubles, four RBIs and eight walks.
High Value
Chris Carter, Brewers (3,700): Carter, in his first season with Milwaukee, is proving once again that he’s one of baseball’s best pure power hitters. His 17 home runs are tied for third in the National League, while his 41 RBIs rank 11th. He’s had more success against righties, but his numbers against Los Angeles Dodgers lefty Scott Kazmir (5-for-17, two doubles, three RBIs) are solid enough to warrant GPP consideration.
Tommy Joseph, Phillies (3,500): The rookie has done well in a first base platoon with veteran Ryan Howard this season. Joseph is hitting .259 overall, but the average jumps to .400 against left-handers. As it happens, the Phillies are facing Toronto Blue Jays southpaw J.A. Happ (7-3, 3.70 ERA) on Thursday.
