MLB Rumors: Padres could trade young star Wil Myers
Latest MLB Rumors suggest that the San Diego Padres are open to trading young slugger Wil Myers.
Wil Myers is really emerging as a young star for the San Diego Padres, but the 27-40 last-place team is reportedly interested in moving him. According to MLB Insider Jon Heyman, the Padres are “intent on remaking their team, are even ‘open’ to trading the emerging slugging star (Myers).”
The 2013 American League Rookie of the Year has struggled through the past couple of seasons, but has really emerged as big-time contributor for the Padres this season. Myers is hitting .281/.321/.504 with 14 home runs through 65 games.
The Padres have made the 25-year-old Myers a full-time first baseman this season, and he has taken to the position change well. While the Padres are obviously interested in rebuilding their major league roster, they are not going to give Myers away for a discounted price.
Any team who wants to trade for Myers is going to have to pay up. The Padres are undoubtedly going to be looking for a significant haul.
If nobody ponies up to the Padres’ asking price, then San Diego will simply sit back and build its offense around their young, impressive slugger. Having a dynamic 25-year-old middle-of-the-order bat to build around is a great place to start.
It will be interesting to see if this goes anywhere else. Heyman is obviously an extremely reputable reporter, but it is not rare for MLB Rumors to pop up and disappear as quickly as they come.
I am sure teams will be lining up to get their offers in if the Padres are legitimately interested in moving Myers.
