Immediately after serving his 51-game suspension for a domestic violence arrest, the Colorado Rockies cut ties with shortstop Jose Reyes. It remains to be seen what kind of interest he will generate, but it is already safe to count the New York teams out.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, both the Mets and Yankees have no interest in bringing Reyes in to the mix in their middle infield.
I suppose this should not be taken as much of a surprise. Reyes is an extremely talented player, but he is now damaged goods after the domestic violence incident over the off season.
Reyes is a career .290/.339/.431 hitter with elite-level speed and athleticism on the field. He spent the first nine years of his career as an impact leadoff hitter for the Mets, and with their issues at the shortstop position, Reyes would represent an upgrade for the team.
On paper, Reyes would also make some sense for the Yankees, as a depth option behind Didi Gregorius and Starlin Castro in the middle infield. However, it is easy to see why neither team would be interested in a player that now brings so much baggage.
It will be interesting to see if the Rockies receive any trade interest on Reyes, but it is more likely that he hits the open market as a free agent. At that point, he could get a team or two to take a risk on him for a low salary, but it would certainly be a risky move.
For now though, the teams in the Big Apple are not interested.
