Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan claimed that his team won the offseason.

Buffalo has had an interesting offseason by most accounts, but that didn’t stop head coach Rex Ryan from saying the team won the offseason, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.

"“I’m excited about this team,” Ryan said after the Bills’ final minicamp practice. “Obviously a lot of things have to happen, and we’re a month or so away, but I told our players today to ‘win July.’ We won the offseason. I would challenge any team. I think we’ve won the offseason.”"

This reeks of lunacy on so many levels. First off, who talks about winning July, when there are no practices or games? It’s understood Ryan is talking about being in shape, but when the organization hasn’t been to the playoffs since 1999, the comments come off with a loser’s tone.

Second, how has Buffalo won the offseason? First-round pick Shaq Lawson needed shoulder surgery after getting hurt this offseason and might miss most if not all of the upcoming season. Wide receiver Sammy Watkins needed a screw inserted into his broken foot and will likely miss all of camp.

As for free agency, Buffalo did nothing of note. The Bills re-signed Cordy Glenn and Richie Incognito on the offensive line, but otherwise were very quiet.

Ryan should focus on his team and not his comments so often. Right now, he needs a playoff berth or he could very well be looking for work.
