After considering trading the talented young blueliner, the Avalanche will reportedly not be trading Tyson Barrie for the time being.

The Colorado Avalanche have some tough decisions to make this offseason as they look to hold a roster that has missed the postseason in consecutive years accountable.

One of the players who was a possibility to be traded was pending restricted free agent Tyson Barrie. However, after contemplating trading the young blue liner, the Avalanche will hang onto him and explore signing him to a new deal.

“I’d like to do a long-term deal with Tyson. If that doesn’t work out, it’s expected he’ll go to arbitration,” Sakic said, via the Denver Post. “Either way, he’ll be here.”

Barrie finished fifth on the Avalanche in points last season and quickly became one of their best defensemen. His status for the 2016-17 season was in question because the Avalanche are already investing quite a bit of money into Eric Johnson and Francois Beauchemin, but the Avalanche seem determined to make it work.

It should be interesting to see how the Avalanche manage to keep both Barrie and fellow pending restricted free agent Nathan MacKinnon. Both are in line for substantial raises and both are very important to Colorado’s future.

The 24-year-old defenseman is expected to take on more responsibility next season for the Avalanche as they look to end their two-year playoff drought. Whether it’s on a long-term deal or a short-term deal, expect Barrie to remain with the Avalanche for now.
