A reporter covering the Baltimore Orioles is in need of a new laptop after a Pedro Alvarez foul ball Friday night.

Everyone is told to pay attention when attending a baseball game. A foul ball can come screaming into the stands during any at-bat and cause serious injury.

Those same foul balls can also find their way into the press box where reporters may feel a false sense of security from the inherent dangers of a baseball game.

Baltimore Sun reporter Eduardo Encina found that out first-hand after a Pedro Alvarez foul ball made its way into the press box and did some fatal damage to his laptop.

Warning: The image below may make computer owners cringe.

There are few things worse than having a laptop be destroyed before being able to back up all the information, so let’s hope Encina invested in an external hard drive before saying an unexpected goodbye to his laptop.

Alvarez was made aware of what happened, but an apology cannot bring back the machine.

The above tweet from Encina shows that his laptop was already dented from a Gerradro Parra could ball last year, leading one to question how qualified Encina is to care for a laptop. One instance is understandable, but two is either a sign of bad luck or the need for Encina to purchase some sort of Kevlar case for his next computer.

It remains to be seen if Alvarez will buy a new laptop for Encina, although he has no obligation to do so.

Encina is tweeting during today’s Orioles game against the Toronto Blue Jays, so it appears he is ready to get back to work after the unfortunate situation Friday night. He just needs to make sure he keeps an eye on his phone or tablet next time a foul ball is heading his way.
