Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson find themselves on the outside looking in after cuts are made at the 2016 U.S. Open

Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania is a tough course, and no one can deny that after seeing the list of players who missed the cut at the 2016 U.S. Open.

Among the golfers missing the cut are Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler.

Mickelson is still trying to complete a career grand slam in golf as he has won the Master’s, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship. The final test for him remains the U.S. Open, and after finishing seven shots over par, he will have to wait another year to try again.

McIlroy came in ranked No. 3 in the world and this was his first missed cut in a major since missing the British Open in 2013. It’s the first time he failed to miss the U.S. Open since 2012.

For Fowler, a tough season continues to get worse. After finishing within striking distance in every major just a couple of year’s ago, he now simply can’t seem to get things going. Fowler has yet to make the cut as he was an early exit at both the U.S. Open and the Master’s Tournament in April.

The exciting young player seems to have kept things in perspective in an interview with Fox Sports after his round, saying there’s a fine line between just making the cut and dropping to 11 shots over as he did at Oakmont.

Dustin Johnson heads into the weekend with the lead at four shots under par, but he has close competition with Andrew Landry within one shot and Sergio Garcia, Scott Piercy and Gregory Bourdy all within two shots.
