Dustin Johnson finally got past all of his demons to win his first major, winning the 2016 US Open at Oakmont
If there’s been one trope in the world of golf and on the PGA Tour, it’s been that Dustin Johnson can’t get it done when it comes to major championships. Time and again one of the best and most talented golfers in the world has come close, but never gotten over the hump and largely failing in spectacular fashion.
After the 2016 US Open, that’s a trope no more. Dustin Johnson is your 2016 US Open Champion.
Johnson entered the final round of play at Oakmont Country Club trailing Shane Lowry by four strokes and playing in the penultimate pairing on Sunday. However, with the way that Oakmont has always played, a solid round from Dustin Johnson or anyone else and a slip-up from Shane Lowry could have won it for him.
And that’s exactly what happened. Johnson played a fantastic round of golf (albeit not without a bit of controversy from the USGA and his ball “moving”) while Lowry crumbled under the pressure of the US Open and the difficult Oakmont course.
Of course, when Dustin Johnson got to No. 18, his fans had been trained to expect the worse. Fortunately for him, he hit a beautiful shot to all but seal it as it set him up for an easy birdie putt, which he hit:
Congratulations, DJ. It’s been a long time coming. Now the question is if this now opens up the floodgates for him now that the monkey is off his back.
