After downing the Warriors in seven, James received the third Finals MVP trophy of his career.
After a tumultuous NBA Finals series, the Cleveland Cavaliers are world champions for the first time in franchise history. LeBron James has come through with the covenant he made with Cavs fans when he decided to return to the team that made him a superstar.
While he was criticized for his play early on in the series, the transcendent style of basketball later demonstrated by James dug his team from a 3-1 hole and brought them to the promise land – earning him his third Finals MVP trophy.
“I’m happy to be a part of history. I can’t wait to get back home. I can’t wait to get to you guys,” James said, referring to the thousands of rabid fans watching back in the ‘Land.
Many speculated that James would be the recipient of the honor whether or not the Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors. For the second year in a row, Stephen Curry struggled with his shot for a majority of the series, and no other player consistently contributed to their team except for James.
As Adam Silver told the dissipating Warriors crowd during the championship ceremony, the King was by far the unanimous MVP. Indeed he was, and we were all witnesses to his greatness.
