1. Dallas will rebuild, Golden State will contend for championships.

Kawakami went right after the biggest reason that Nowitzki could leave Dallas for Golden State in his Monday article: Dallas has to begin an inevitable rebuild, if it already hasn’t. Golden State is poised to contend for NBA Championships for at least the next two or three years.

As much as Nowitzki loves his Mavericks, barring something miraculous Dallas isn’t going to win another championship with Nowitzki on its roster. Dallas can barely win a first round game with the Nowitzki/Carlisle tandem.

It takes 16 playoff victories to win an NBA Championship. Dallas is lucky to get two annually, assuming the Mavericks continue to qualify. Golden State is a shoe-in for a top three seed in its current state, good enough to win eight to 10 playoff games in a bad season (i.e. lose 4-2 in a Conference Finals).

People didn’t think Paul Pierce was going to play for anybody but the Boston Celtics. He’s been on three different teams in the last three years (Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, Clippers) trying to win one more championship since the Celtics began a brief rebuild after the 2012 season.

While his heart forever will be in Dallas, could one really blame Nowitzki for leaving the Mavericks to try to win one more NBA Championship before retiring? Given that this news got out, it’s probably because Nowitzki’s public relations team wants it out. Maybe he is more like Pierce and less like Bryant and Duncan after all?
