3. D’Angelo Russell

After locker room drama split D’Angelo Russell from the rest of his Laker teammates during his rookie season, it’s no surprise Los Angeles is rumored to be trying to deal the talented guard who was taken second overall in last year’s draft.

Russell’s rookie campaign may not have started the way he wanted as he struggled early on to find a rhythm playing next to Kobe Bryant. However, by years end Russell averaged nearly 20 ppg along with 5 rebounds and assists a game.

Despite playing for a dismal Lakers squad that won just 17 games, Russell was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and showed the same playing making ability that made him a star at Ohio State.

If the Timberwolves are looking to deal the no. 5 pick, they could certainly do worse than Russell for a return.

Thrown into a rotation alongside Rubio and LaVine at the guard spots and Minnesota would have one of the most exciting guard rotations in the league. Also, with the depth at guard, Russell could play more at the two, where his ability to create his own shot could be useful. Also, getting away from Byron Scott’s Princeton-style offense would definitely benefit Russell’s skills.

Russell may not have lived up to the hype of being a second-overall draft selection in his rookie year. He was often criticized for his lack of maturity and described as lazy at times, especially at the start of the season. However, these are the kinds of problems teams will run into trying to mold a 19-year old getting his first taste of life in the NBA.

If the T-Wolves have an opportunity to acquire Russell, they should.
