5 reasons why Knicks win Derrick Rose trade with Bulls
By Brad Weiss
The New York Knicks made a big splash on Wednesday, trading for former NBA MVP Derrick Rose. The move instantly upgrades them at the point guard position and gives them a chance to win now.
The New York Knicks acquired Derrick Rose on Wednesday, trading away three players in exchange for the former MVP. In the trade, the Knicks sent center Robin Lopez and guards Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Rose, Justin Holiday, and a 2017 second round draft pick.
In exchange for Rose, the Knicks bid farewell to a diminished Calderon and an unproven Grant, and in turn, received a player who was once considered the top young player at his position. Those days may be over, but Rose still has the ability to light up Madison Square Garden on any given night, and he may ready to take on a full slate of games.
Rose is coming off his best year in some time, as the guard has battled multiple knee injuries since being named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2011. In 66 games last season, Rose scored 16.4 points per game and dished out nearly five assists per contest. Rose played nearly 32 minutes per game for the Bulls last season and showed flashes of his old self at times.
Still only 27-years old, Rose is in the final year of his contract, and instantly upgrades a position that was an eyesore for the Knicks last year. New York has won only 49 games combined the last two seasons, and with no draft picks in this year’s draft, they needed to make a splash via trade.
Here is a look at the five reasons the Knicks won the Derrick Rose trade.
