NBA Draft: Every team’s least popular pick ever
Atlanta Hawks – Jon Koncak (1985)
As far as players in the NBA go, no matter what position they play or skill set that they possess, there’s a pattern to a successful career that many players follow. Even if they start out tearing it up at the professional level, you like for their statistical output and production to resemble a parabola as it rises in their late 20s to its peak. So when you look at Jon Koncak as the No. 5 overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft for the Atlanta Hawks, what he did is more than a little bit troubling.
Coming out of SMU as a big center, Koncak looked promising as a rookie when he put up 8.3 points, and 5.7 rebounds per game while only playing 20.7 minutes per. However, the Hawks would surely have liked to have known then that the 1985-86 season would be the best of Koncak’s career. While he was always a big body and a decent enough role player, that’s not great value at the No. 5 overall pick.
What makes Koncak even less popular is the list of players taken after him in the 1985 NBA Draft. Considering that Chris Mullin, Detlef Schrempf, Charles Oakley, and Karl Malone were all taken in the top-15 but after Koncak, how are Hawks fans supposed to feel but a little upset?
