Report: Pacers working on Jeff Teague contract extension
After trading to acquire Jeff Teague, the Pacers are looking to lock the point guard up to a contract extension
The Indiana Pacers, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Utah Jazz certainly weren’t afraid to rock the boat a bit in the NBA one day out from the 2016 NBA Draft. On Wednesday afternoon, the three teams completed a deal that sent George Hill to the Jazz, the No. 12 pick on Thursday night to Atlanta, and point guard Jeff Teague to the Pacers.
This is obviously a pretty big deal that shakes things up in the draft and in the Eastern Conference with a player like Teague heading to Indiana. However, one of the interesting wrinkles about the point guard is the fact that he’s entering the final year of his contract. That’s something that the Pacers are looking to rectify sooner rather than later.
Almost immediately after breaking the news of the trade itself, Adrian Wojnarowksi of The Vertical reported that the Pacers were already planning to work with Teague to try and get a contract extension ready to go:
While the Pacers weren’t the ones giving up a huge piece and asset like the Jazz did, getting Teague locked up long term is crucial to how this deal looks for them. Even if the only player we know that they gave up is Hill right now, giving up a starting point guard for only one year of an upgrade is hardly worth it. As such, Indiana fans have to be praying that this extension with Jeff Teague comes around sooner rather than later.
