Michigan State. Deyonta Davis . 9. player. 81. Deyonta Davis is another prospect whose NCAA stats aren’t stupendous, which means when he’s selected we will hear a lot of “wingspan”, “upside”, “potential” and “length” comments likely made by Jay Bilas. His stats belie his actual presence and impact on the court as he only averaged 7.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks for Tom Izzo and the Spartans last year as a freshman.

The 19-year old Davis fits the newly-minted template of what a big man coming into the league should be. He has solid footwork, quickness laterally, jumps out of the gym, and has instinctual talents when it comes to erasing opponents’ shot attempts. His block rate (10.2) alone has NBA coaches and front office executives salivating at the thought of having his 7-2 wingspan along their frontcourt.

Masai Ujiri and the Raptors could see Davis as their long-term center moving forward, and with Jonas Valanciunas as their starter right now, they can take a risk on a potential stud here at the No. 9 pick. Toronto has the enviable position of making the Eastern Conference Finals and still having a lottery pick to add to their stable of talent the following season. Davis could join that stable of young horses along with Bruno Caboclo and Lucas “Bebe” Nogueira next season.
