NBA Draft: Every team’s best pick ever
By Daniel Lewis
Atlanta Hawks: Kevin Willis, No. 11, 1984 NBA Draft
Kevin Willis played 10 seasons for the Atlanta Hawks after being selected eleventh overall in the 1984 draft, teaming up with Dominique Wilkins, Doc Rivers, and Spud Webb to help the Hawks make the postseason. He went to the playoffs six times with the Hawks, averaging 14 points and 9 rebounds for his career in Atlanta. Willis was traded to the Heat in 1994, and went on to play for seven more teams, ultimately retiring in 2006.
A physical force on the interior, with biceps that probably deserve a place of recognition in the Hall of Fame, Willis finished his career with over 16,000 points and 11,000 rebounds. He was one of just 15 players in NBA history to reach both marks. His career was mostly remarkable for its duration and he was never one of the best players in the league. However, he was a solid defensive presence, rebounder, and complementary scorer. While Willis will likely be remembered for playing until he was 44 years old, and wearing a jersey for nearly a third of the teams in the league, he’ll be remembered for starting off with the Hawks.
