NBA Draft: Every team’s best pick ever
By Daniel Lewis
Utah Jazz: John Stockton, No. 16, 1984 NBA Draft
The sixteenth overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft, John Stockton spent his entire career with the Utah Jazz. It took four seasons for Stockton to become the full-time starter, but once he was given the starting gig, there was no equal for his ability to distribute the basketball. Stockton lead the NBA in assists for nine consecutive seasons, setting the standard for pick-and-roll offense with power forward Karl Malone. Stockton was an efficient scorer as well, and finished his career as the second all-time scorer in Jazz history behind Malone. He was named to 10 All-Star teams, and went to two NBA Finals, losing both times to the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls.
Flashier players have, from before and after his era, overshadowed some of his accomplishments but he is still generally considered one of the greatest point guards to ever play the game. He is the NBA’s all-time assist leader, with nearly 4000 more assists than any other player in league history. Stockton is also the NBA’s all-time steals leader, another career record he holds which may never be broken.
His career earned him a spot in the Hall of Fame, a fitting end to a stellar career.
