First Baseman

High-Salary Option: Paul Goldschmidt-Arizona Diamondbacks (4,900): Arizona is playing at altitude as they take on the Rockies and Goldschmidt is rolling having posted at least 12 fantasy points in five of his last six contests.  He has gone 11-25 (.440) over the last week including a pair of homers and is 28-78 (.359) with four homers this month.  He is hitting .375 (24-64) against lefties this season as well, so virtually every split points to him as a big bat to build around tonight in Denver if you can figure out a way to squeeze him under your salary cap.∗∗∗∗

High-Salary Option: David Ortiz-Boston Red Sox (4,200): Ortiz just keeps on rolling and is 23-65 (.354) this month with four homers.  He enjoys hitting in Texas and his left-handed swing is tailor-made for the short right field.  He is a career .298 hitting against the Rangers with a .973 OPS. He has 19 career homers in his 51 career games in Arlington, and he should be able to keep mashing tonight against Rangers’ starter Nick Martinez who is part of the Rangers’ recent scramble in their starting rotation.∗∗∗

Mid-range Option: Mark Reynolds-Colorado Rockies (3,800): The Rockies are at home in Coors Field tonight, and Mark Reynolds is a good play as he looks to keep his strong season going.  He is hitting .290 after going 2-5 last night and connected on his seventh homer of the season.  He makes sense as midrange play based on form and matchup in the hitter-friendly air of Denver.∗∗∗

Mid-range Option: Justin Bour-Miami Marlins (3,200): Bour has been red-hot this past week going 6-13 (.462) with a double and a pair of homers to raise his June numbers to impressive levels (.326, 3 HR, 10 RBI). He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, and should be right in the middle of the Miami attack again tonight. He and the Marlins host Kyle Hendricks of the Cubs who has been more hittable on the road than at home and by lefties like Bour than righties so far this season. Bour didn’t play in last night’s series opener, but I like him to contribute tonight. ∗∗∗∗

High-Value Option: John Jaso-Pittsburgh Pirates  (2,900): Jaso has hit safely in three straight including a double and a home run and has picked his average up to .278 on the season.  He led off for Pittsburgh in each of those three contests and will likely be atop the lineup again tonight against Nick Tepesch and the Dodgers.

Jaso faced Tepesch while Jaso was in Tampa and Tepesch in Texas, and he went 3-8 with two doubles and a homer off the righty. Jaso splits horribly against lefties (1-13 this year), but with a righty on the mound and playing at home I think he makes sense as a value play under 3K tonight.∗∗
