Talks of a Jose Reyes reunion with the New York Mets have swirled around Queens but not all fans are on board with the idea and some have begun to take action.
With David Wright most likely out for the season with a neck injury, the Mets are now in need of a long term replacement at third base. One of the names being thrown around is Jose Reyes. Reyes, who played for the Mets from 2003-2011, will be available to sign when he is released by the Colorado Rockies this weekend.
The Mets need something to shake this team up but many people believe that Reyes is not it.
Life-long Mets’ fan Olivia Devlin started a petition to keep Reyes from reuniting with her beloved New York Mets. In this petition, Devlin cited the incident where Reyes allegedly pushed his wife through a sliding glass door, leading to his arrest.
Devlin is originally from the U.K but moved to Harlem in 2014. She has been a Mets’ fan all of her life and watches almost every game. If that doesn’t prove her fan credentials, she even has a Wilmer Flores tattoo in the Venezuelan colors, yellow, blue and red located on her right shoulder.
According to the New York Daily News, Devlin started a Twitter account and petition after Tuesday’s game against the Royals.
Not everyone agreed with her message though. “People are openly defending his actions and attempting to downplay the seriousness of domestic violence, and in some cases blaming his wife,” Devlin said when talking about non supporters. According to Devlin, one man wrote “I could care less about his wife…I wanna win a championship.”
Despite the mixed support, Devlin feels she will not be alone in her protest. She told the News that approximately seven out of every 10 people agreed with her message.
It is unknown whether the Mets will pursue Reyes. They have Wilmer Flores currently taking the role of the everyday third baseman and they plan to bring in Cuban star Yulieski Gurriel for a workout.
