Charlotte Hornets

Picks: Well they had No. 22, but they traded it straight up for Marco Belinelli

Really, Charlotte? Were you completely unaware of what the value of your late first round draft pick was? Had Rich Cho and Michael Jordan and the Hornets front office not been keeping up with the ticker regarding pre-draft trades on Thursday or what? It’s just hard to fathom how the Hornets could look at the No. 22 pick they owned and get what they ultimately did for it.

Right before the start of the draft, news broke that the Hornets had struck a deal with the Sacramento Kings for the No. 22 pick. While you’d have liked for Charlotte to be able to get another young asset through the draft, a trade would be fine if they were able to get good value for the pick. Instead they traded said first-rounder for Marco Belinelli—and yes that is as absolutely ludicrous as it sounds.

Even the most ardent Belinelli supporters will tell you that this trade is so stupid no matter how much it helps Charlotte. Consider this. On Thursday—the exact same day as the Charlotte trade—the Nets were willing to give up Thaddeus Young to get the No. 20 pick. There’s absolutely no way that the Hornets should consider two picks back from No. 20 to be valued as the difference between Young and Belinelli. That’s lunacy and the Hornets should be ashamed of their draft day performance.

Final Grade: The F-est of Fs
