Minnesota Timberwolves – The youth movement

The Oklahoma City Thunder were once the next big thing in NBA circles. Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Serge Ibaka and James Harden (yes, James Harden) came together at an obscenely young age under Scott Brooks and Sam Presti, and even when OKC fell short in the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat, everyone assumed that they would return in short order.

While the Thunder haven’t been able to recapture that early lightning in a bottle, a new team has attracted a ton of attention as the next up-and-coming juggernaut, and that is the Minnesota Timberwolves. It certainly helps that Minnesota has two recent number one overall picks on the roster in Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, but the Wolves also have prime young assets in Zach LaVine, Gorgui Dieng and even Ricky Rubio.

Because these players (outside of Rubio) are on rookie deals, the Wolves have a ton of cap space to play with, leaving plenty of room for a run at Durant. Elite players often want to avoid super-young teams in favor of established squads, but Minnesota’s window is wide open, and in Towns, Durant would have a top-tier running mate for the foreseeable future.

This won’t happen for a myriad of reasons, but if it did, it would be incredible to witness.
