It took just two minutes into Sunday’s Round of 16 contest for the Republic of Ireland to go up 1-0 against the Euro 2016 hosts, France.

The Republic of Ireland were five minutes away from elimination, when Robert Brady came to the rescue. They were playing Italy in the final match of the group stage, and the Italians had already clinched first place and a Round of 16 matchup against Spain. Just when it seemed that the luck of the Irish had run out, the Norwich City midfielder found the back of the net and booked Ireland a ticket to the knockout rounds.

Martin O’Neill’s side had done what they had set out to do, and make it out of the group. However, they were given a daunting task in the Round of 16 playing the hosts, France. Despite their win against an Italian side that looked impressive in their first two matches, nobody was giving Ireland much of a chance to beat a French side that was filled with talent.

It took just two minutes into Sunday’s contest though, for the Irish to capture the imaginations of fans and media alike. A clumsy Paul Pogba took down Shane Long in the box and the referee did not hesitate to point to the spot.

No surprise, it was Wednesday’s hero that stepped up to take the penalty and Brady made no mistake about it. The Irish had shocked France and the entire planet, by going up 1-0 after just two minutes.

Sunday’s winner of the match will take on either  England or Iceland, depending on who comes up on top when those two sides meet Monday at 3 p.m. ET.
