5 free agents the Cleveland Cavaliers should target
By Brad Weiss
The Cleveland Cavaliers head into the off-season as the reigning NBA Champions. Let’s take a look at some potential free agent targets for the Cavs.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are fresh off the heels of their first NBA championship. Led by LeBron James, the Cavs battled back from a 3-1 deficit against defending champion Golden State Warriors to give the city of Cleveland their first major sports title since 1964.
Now that the dust has settled, the team will be forced to make some big decisions heading into next year. They currently have five players on their roster who will be free agents, including some major pieces, and they have no cap space to play with.
J.R. Smith (player option), Matthew Dellavedova (restricted), Mo Williams (player option), Timofey Mozgov, and James Jones can all walk, but the Cavs are over the salary cap space even if they do.
The Cavaliers do own Bird rights over Smith, Dellavedova, and Mozgov, meaning they can exceed the salary cap to bring them back.
In order for the Cavaliers to do anything in free agency, they will likely have to part ways with Kevin Love, who is guaranteed over $21 million dollars next season. They should be able to find a team willing to take him in a trade, given that he was a superstar for the Minnesota Timberwolves not long ago.
With that being said, here is a look at five free agents they should target.
