Euro 2016: England fans petition Parliament for an Iceland rematch
By Hunter Cooke
It didn’t take very long for this England petition to take off.
England suffered a crushing defeat to Iceland in Euro 2016 Monday. They looked strong in the opening moments of the match due to a 4′ penalty kick from Wayne Rooney, but Iceland quickly struck back at the 6′ mark with a solid Sigurdsson header. At the 17′ mark, England’s goalie Joe Hart let a Sigthorsson kick in, and Iceland took the lead 2-1.
England desperately tried to find the equalizing goal for the rest of the game, but no shots found their mark. After 90’+3 of playing time, the upset was solidified, and England suffered one of their worst losses in recent history.
Naturally, this didn’t sit well with England fans. People tend to do rash things when they’re upset with the results of sports matches, but what some England fans concocted after their defeat at the hands of Iceland is comical in its own strange little way.
You read that right. England fans are petitioning their Parliament to change the ruling and get a rematch with Iceland. At the time of the tweet the petition was at 10,451 signatures, and is likely much higher than that at the time of writing. The fact that there is an official petition to the English Parliament so quickly is hilarious.
It’s definitely not the first time fans have started petitions, and it won’t be the last. The comedy comes with the swiftness of the petition. An England fan started this petition while the game was still ongoing. I understand it was a tough loss, but hey, you can’t win ’em all.
