For winning three games over teams from the state of Florida, FSU gave players rings despite not winning the national or conference title.
In the 2015 college football season, the Florida State Seminoles didn’t win the ACC for the first time since the 2011 season and wasn’t in the national title game or College Football Playoff for the first time since 2012. When the year was over, FSU finished with a 10-3 record and a loss in the Peach Bowl to the Houston Cougars.
But don’t worry, FSU players from last season, you’re still getting some bling!
The school is giving players from the 2015 team a ring for the season to commemorate winning a fictional state championship by beating three teams from the Sunshine State during the season:

Now, let’s take a moment to actually defend the Seminoles for this move. The idea of state champions usually only applies to the big three schools (FSU, Florida and Miami) playing each other every season, something that has only happened six times since in the last 28 seasons. FSU, being the only school that still plays the other two, also played USF last season, meaning they played the other three FBS schools in the state who went to a bowl game.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way …
This is the sports equivalent of the participation trophy that drives so many people crazy. True, FSU is not the first school to give out rings for something so useless as a fictional state title, but that doesn’t get the ‘Noles off the hook for doing this. It’s embarrassing to go from giving out three straight ACC title rings and a national title ring to this.
