Ragnar Sigurdsson answers England with goal in Round of 16 (Video)
Iceland defender Ragnar Sigurdsson came up huge vs England in the Round of 16 of the 2016 Euros as he netted a quick equalizer early in the first half
Iceland have been by far the most entertaining and inspiring story of the 2016 Euros with their run as the underdogs in the tournament. On Monday in the Round of 16 though, Iceland stood before a far superior—in terms of talent—England side again as the heavy underdogs. And within the first five minutes, that looked to hold true as the English went up 1-0 on a Wayne Rooney penalty. The inspirational Icelanders weren’t fazed a bit, however, and Ragnar Sigurdsson had the response.
After winning a throw-in in the England defensive third, Iceland elected to go for the long throw. It was sent into the top near corner of the box onto the head of an Iceland player. They then played the ball to the far post where defenseman Ragnar Sigurdsson was making a beautiful run and poked home the enormous goal:
Obviously that’s a humungous goal simply on the merits that it tied the match at 101 for Iceland. However, it was more important than the scoreboard could ever indicate.
Given how heavy of underdogs Iceland are, letting Rooney’s early goal sink in could have devastated their confidence. Instead, Sigurdsson answered decisively and really left the momentum hanging in the balance—which clearly works in favor of Iceland.
