Roy Hodgson steps down as England manager
England manager Roy Hodgson steps down after Euro 2016 round of 16 exit.
It wasnt going to be easy for Roy Hodgson’s England squad when Euro 2016 started. They had a lot of pressure to succeed and hopefully end the countries trophy drought. Hodgson made rumblings after selecting a questionable team with the likes of the often injured Jack Wilshire and the youngster Marcus Rashford. However they managed to finish second in their group, behind Wales, and move onto the round of 16 to face the historic and small nation of Iceland.
Give Iceland credit, they played each game with so much passion and never backed down to any team they faced. They managed a draw against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and now have defeated England.
After the historic loss, Hodgson went in front of the media and said he is stepping down as England manager after four years in charge.
Hodgson told the press that, “i’m sorry it will have to end this way but these things happen,” via BBC.
“I hope you will still be able to see an England team in a final of a major tournament soon.”
Before the summer tournament kicked off, English FA chairman Greg Dyke mentioned that Hodgson would be back if the team at least reached a quarter-final berth. Hodgson leaves the team with a 31-15-7 record over four seasons, but managed to guide the Three Lions to a very impressive 10-0-0 Euro qualifying record.
