2016 NBA free agency: 5 worst fits for Jeremy Lin
By John Buhler
There is a group of diehard Knicks fans that would nothing more than to see Linsantiy, Part Deux in 2016-17. Until the Derrick Rose trade last Wednesday, New York was actually a suitable free agency destination for the former Knick point guard.
However, splitting time at point guard with Rose just seems like a problem waiting to happen. Rose is on the last year of his contract initially signed with the Chicago Bulls. If for some reason he struggles running the point for the 2016-17 Knicks, the Madison Square Garden faithful will clamor for the return of Linsanity.
That type of potential point guard controversy won’t do much for a Knicks team that will be vying for a NBA Playoffs push. New York doesn’t have to go far in the playoffs to have a good season, the Knicks just need to get there. The distraction of Linsanity can’t be good for his potential working relationship with Rose.
The shame in it all is that Lin would actually be a pretty good player in new head coach Jeff Hornacek’s system, running an offense through promising stretch five Kristaps Porzingis. Maybe even Carmelo Anthony would be keen to seeing his former Knicks teammate back with the club in 2016-17. However the amount of uncertainty remains with what a point guard tandem of Lin and Rose would play like in dysfunctional New York.
