The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, making their first ever trip to the College World Series, beat Arizona Thursday to win the national title.

In what was a wild edition of the College World Series that saw two teams making their first ever appearance in Omaha and two of the top three national seeds get knocked out first, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers made history for their school with a 4-3 win over Arizona in the deciding game three of the championship round.

After winning the Raleigh, NC regional and dispatching of nationally seeded LSU in the Super Regional round, CCU kept it going with a shocking upset of overall top seed Florida in their CWS opener. After ending up in the loser’s bracket, the Chanticleers would make it to the championship round by beating TCU in back to back games to advance to face the Wildcats.

Arizona would win Game One on Monday, with Coastal Carolina getting the win in Game Two. The deciding Game Three was pushed to Thursday afternoon, and CCU took advantage with a four run sixth inning led by a two run homer from G.K. Young, a native of the school’s hometown of Conway, SC:

The homer would prove to be crucial as Arizona would score three runs and have the two runners on in the bottom of the ninth before Coastal Carolina shut the door:

The team’s Twitter account summed it up perfectly for the first national title for ANY sports in the school’s history:

In a year where upsets have been all over the place (Iceland over England recently comes to mind), you can add these scrappy players from the Big South Conference to the list of teams that will go down in history.
