Marlins acquire Fernando Rodney in trade with Padres
The Marlins are getting some help for the bullpen, as they have traded for Fernando Rodney.
After years of mediocrity, the Miami Marlins have shown life in the 2016 MLB season. They sit in second place in the NL East, just 5.5 games behind the Washington Nationals. While the team from D.C. may end up running away with the division, the Marlins still stand a chance at getting a Wild Card spot.
To enhance their chances, the Marlins have traded for San Diego Padres closer Fernando Rodney, according to Keith Law of ESPN. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports later confirmed the deal being completed. The Padres will receive Chris Paddack from Miami.
Rodney had been dominant for the Padres in 2016, putting up a minuscule 0.31 ERA, 17 saves and a WHIP of 0.87. This has all been for a horrible San Diego team that sits in the cellar of the NL West. They have been marred by poor play all around and an owner that called out the team earlier this month, only to lead to worse results.
As for the 39-year-old’s role with the Marlins, he will likely become the setup man to closer A.J. Ramos.
Paddack is a 20-year-old who hasn’t played above Class A, but has dominated in 2016. Through six starts, he has an ERA of 0.95 with 48 strikeouts in 28.1 innings pitched. Batters are also hitting just .098 against him.
This Rodney trade is all about 2016 for the Marlins. If he can help lock down the back end of the bullpen and contribute to a playoff appearance, then Miami will be fine. The Padres received a solid prospect in this deal and will go forward with their rebuilding.
