NBA free agency: Mike Conley to meet with Mavericks before Grizzlies
By John Buhler
Sought-after free agent point guard Mike Conley will reportedly meet with the Dallas Mavericks before meeting with his long-time team Memphis Grizzlies.
According to Dallas Mavericks beat writer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Dwain Price, “the [Mavericks] will meet with [Memphis] Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley on Friday afternoon–BEFORE he has a meeting with the Grizzlies.”
Conley is the premier point guard talent hitting 2016 NBA free agency. A top 10 point guard in the NBA and a nine-year veteran with the Grizzlies, Conley just might leave Memphis in free agency this summer. Dallas has appeared as the primary team vying for Conley’s point guard abilities outside of the Grizzlies.
Dallas needs to do well in free agency this summer, as the Mavericks are certainly losing small forward Chandler Parson after he opted out of his deal with Dallas this offseason. Though the Mavericks could end up re-signing veteran point guard Deron Williams, it’s at least in Dallas’ best interests to schedule a meeting with a highly coveted point guard from a Southwest Division rival.
The free agency market for point guards is especially slim this summer, and perhaps Dallas is the best landing spot for Conley outside of just re-upping with Memphis. By joining the Mavericks, Conley would play on a playoff caliber team led by aging superstar Dirk Nowitzki that is also possibly adding free agent center Hassan Whiteside into the fold.
Memphis has gone hard after keeping their prized point guard this free agency period, as the Grizzlies will almost certainly take a giant leap backwards if they aren’t able to bring back Conley on a maximum contract of five years.
