According to sources, the Chicago Blackhawks are expected to sign defenseman Brian Campbell to a short deal.

The Chicago Blackhawks have a desperate need for defensemen who can play big minutes while still being cheap. Their hands were sort of tied due to their lack of cap space. However, help is one the way as the Blackhawks are expected to sign free agent defenseman Brian Campbell to a short deal that is likely one year.

This is a nice fit for both the Blackhawks and Campbell. Campbell is coming off a huge contract that he originally signed with the Blackhawks before being traded to the Florida Panthers. Despite turning 37 years old in May, Campbell is still a very reliable defenseman and puck mover. He still managed 31 points during the regular season in 2015-16 while playing big minutes for the Florida Panthers.

Campbell is familiar with the Blackhawks and the Blackhawks are familiar with Campbell. Head coach Joel Quenneville loves veterans that he can trust and there’s nothing to suggest that Campbell will not be trusted by Quenneville just like he was from 2008 to 2011. He will likely be on the team’s second pairing with Brent Seabrook on the second pairing. Expect Campbell to see some time on the power play as well.

There is very little risk involved because it’s likely not that big of a cap hit. Once again, general manager Stan Bowman has found a free agent bargain who should help them.
