Indiana Pacers: Find a shooting guard
The Pacers have a fairly exciting roster and they should be happy about that. Paul George is a legitimate NBA star, and Indiana uncovered a diamond in the rough when the team selected Myles Turner outside of the top ten picks in the 2015 NBA Draft. Throw in the fact that Larry Bird picked up a strong point guard in Jeff Teague and a versatile and talented power forward with Thaddeus Young surrounding this year’s draft, and the core is very encouraging in the present.
Unfortunately, Indiana’s roster as currently constructed isn’t nearly enough to challenge Golden State at the top of the league. The shooting guard position is the one glaring weakness, where we say hello to the incomparable Monta Ellis.
Ellis boasts a career scoring average of 18.7 points per game, and that allows him to curry favor in NBA circles. However, he is a wildly inefficient player at this stage, with back to back seasons in which he posted a 50% true shooting with little to no value elsewhere. For good measure, Ellis is a poor defender, and if Indiana is going to make hay this season, they will need an upgrade in this regard.
Larry Bird should look far and wide for an upgrade, and if he can’t find it, the Pacers will be good but not great.
