Minnesota Timberwolves: Be Patient

It could easily be argued that Minnesota has the most attractive young nucleus of talent in the entire NBA. No, really, it could.

Karl-Anthony Towns would be very high on any list of “players to build around for the next decade” and he is already an upper-echelon NBA big man at the age of 20. Behind him, Andrew Wiggins is a budding star as a former number one overall pick, Zach LaVine is an uber-talented shooting guard with upside and the Wolves have a strong duo of point guards in Ricky Rubio (who remains perpetually underrated) and number five overall selection Kris Dunn.

Could the Wolves screw this up? Absolutely.

Minnesota pushing into “win now” mode too early would be a death knell, and that is the risk with Tom Thibodeau. He is famously aggressive in pushing the most out of his talent, but in the same breath, Thibodeau doesn’t strike anyone as a care-taker over a rebuild. The Wolves have enough salary cap space and flexibility (Gorgui Dieng could be traded, for instance) to make something of a big splash this summer, but that would be a mistake unless a fiscally responsible move appears.

Building around Towns and taking a cautious, long-term approach is the move. We’ll see if the Wolves adhere to it.
