New York Knicks: Avoid the mistakes of the past
Knicks gonna Knicks.
That is already the theme of the 2016 off-season in Manhattan. New York engineered a deal to acquire Derrick Rose in exchange for Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant and filler, and that was clearly a move driven by star power and “win now” attitude. Now, word has leaked that the Knicks are focusing heavily on the center position in free agency, eschewing the fact that Kristaps Porzingis is probably a center long-term and Carmelo Anthony is likely better as a long-term power forward than a small forward at this stage.
Hello, Knicks!
This is a franchise that has been hellbent on handicapping itself for the long-term over decades at this point (remember the days of Isiah Thomas and horrifying salary cap sheets?), and these philosophies are in line with that. Instead of making overtures in this way, the Knicks would be (much) better off adding young, relatively cheap talent on the perimeter, while simultaneously securing the services of players like Langston Galloway and Lance Thomas as restricted free agents.
Play Kristaps Porzingis at center, play Carmelo Anthony at power forward and take your time. Just once, Knicks.
Just once.
