Brooklyn Nets: Prayer and more prayer
On the bright side, the Nets have promising figures in the head coach and general manager positions. Kenny Atkinson brings with him a sterling reputation from his work with the Atlanta Hawks, and as a player development stalwart, he is a nice fit in Brooklyn. Sean Marks comes from the Spurs front office tree and, well, that speaks for itself.
Now, with that out of the way, the Nets have no real chance to unseat the Warriors. At least not anytime soon.
Brooklyn has arguably the worst stable of assets in the entire NBA, as the deal that netted the franchise Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett gutted the future in a major way. The Nets are already looking to the future, as evidenced by the trade that sent Thaddeus Young away for a first-round pick, but Brooklyn doesn’t have a ton of draft assets and only Brook Lopez is an above-average player on the current roster.
The Nets do have bottomless pockets when it comes to potential spending, but in a league that employs a salary cap, they can’t just buy a winner. Brooklyn is making the right moves right now, but it will take a few years to jump to the top of the league, even if everything goes swimmingly.
