Dallas Mavericks: Convince Dirk to take the minimum

Dirk Nowitzki has been one of the better bargains in the NBA over the past few seasons. The ageless German big man continues to show loyalty to the Dallas Mavericks organization by playing for less than he is worth in search of a title, and Mark Cuban just might have to ask him to do it again.

Nowitzki declined an option this summer and, as a result, he will be a free agent yet again. Dallas has big plans to make a “splash” move in free agency, but in order to do enough to make a real run at challenging the Warriors, the Mavs will need Nowitzki to take the NBA’s veteran minimum salary.

Yes, the minimum salary.

It is not terribly far-fetched to think that Nowitzki would do this, especially if the accompanying moves place Dallas in a legitimate position to challenge for the title. Later, the Mavericks could make it up to him with something of a balloon payment or even a role in the organization that could not be “promised” under the collective bargaining agreement.

Personally, I am skeptical that Cuban and his team could lure enough talent to make this viable, but it helps to have a selfless superstar on board.
