Mike Conley signs biggest contract in NBA history
By Hunter Cooke
Just days after Andrew Luck signed the biggest contract in the history of the NFL, the Grizzlies put ink to paper with Mike Conley, giving him the biggest NBA contract ever.
Let’s get one thing out of the way: Mike Conley is a very good player. He’s been a solid scorer and game manager from his point guard position for the Grizzlies, and he still has his best years ahead of him. However, you never hear his name come up when you talk about the truly elite point guards in the NBA. That’s why it shocked the world when Mike Conley inked a deal for 153 million on Friday, making him the highest paid player in the NBA.
That is an obscene amount of money for a guy who isn’t in the top tier of his own position, much less the top tier in the NBA.
The Grizzlies had a solid season in 2015-2016, making the playoffs before being swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round. They must like what they have going on there with Conley, because this recent contract makes him a Grizzly for five more years.
The Grizzlies also signed experienced forward Chandler Parsons away from the Dallas Mavericks today. Memphis gave Parsons the max deal in addition to Conley’s. Chandler Parsons will make 94.8 million over 4 years in Memphis. I want the Grizzlies to succeed, I really do. I can’t help but think that they’re reaching with this deal. Chandler Parsons and Mike Conley are good, not great players. They shouldn’t be getting great player money.
