NBA free agency: Pistons sign Ish Smith to three-year deal
The Detroit Pistons have reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with point guard Ish Smith
One of the teams that has to be on everyone’s radar heading into the 2016-17 NBA season is the Detroit Pistons. Not only did they push the eventual champions in the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs on a few occasions, but they also are still being molded fully in the style of head coach and general manager Stan Van Gundy. They’ve taken another step in that direction to start 2016 NBA free agency.
According to a report from David Mayo of MLive Media Group, the Pistons reached an agreement with point guard Ish Smith on a three-year deal early on Friday morning after free agency began:
After bouncing around the league and even being discarded by the New Orleans Pelicans, Smith had himself an absolutely monster year once he joined the Philadelphia 76ers. Though the financial details of this contract with the Pistons aren’t up yet, he certainly earned himself a hefty payday with what he did in Philly last year.
For the Pistons, this is a fantastic move. One of the biggest needs that the team had last season that they needed to address this offseason was the depth of their backcourt behind Reggie Jackson. Ish Smith is a tremendous upgrade from Steve Blake and should fit right into what SVG likes to do.
Watch out—the Pistons are definitely on the rise and this signing only moves them higher.
